The Director of the State Security Department is appointed for the term of five years and released by the President of the State with the approval of Lithuanian Parliament.
Darius Jauniškis was appointed to the position of the Director of the State Security Department for the term of five years on April 13, 2015 by the Decree of the President of the State. D. Jauniškis was appointed for a second term on April 14, 2020.
Curriculum vitae of the Director
In the period of 1990–1993 he worked in the Security Department of the Supreme Council.
In the period of 1993–1994 he worked in the State Security Department.
In 1995, be began serving in the Special Forces. From 1997 to 2006 he was the Deputy-Head of the Special Forces and during the period of 2006-2008 he was the Head of the Special Forces.
In 2008 he was appointed to the position of the Head of the Special Operations.
On April 14, 2015 D. Jauniškis began serving as the Director of VSD.
D. Jauniškis has a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics. He studied in Baltic Defense College in Estonia and in Land Forces Military College in the United States of America. In 2012, in Washington University he obtained a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies.
In 2002, 2004 and 2007 D. Jauniškis participated in international missions.

Order of the Cross of Vytis, Knight Cross; Medal of the 13th of January; Medal of the National Defence System (NDS) “For Merits”; Medal of the Volunteering Creators of Lithuanian Military Forces; Order of the Cross of Vytis, Military Officer’s Cross; Medal of Lithuanian Military Forces “For Merits”, Medal of USA Military Forces, Medal of NDS for international operations, Medal of Lithuanian Military Forces “For Excellence”.
The most essential functions of the Director of VSD
The Director of VSD fulfils the tasks of the State President, Seimas and the Government which are related to the functions of the State Security Department: leads and represents the Department, organizes its work, proposes the projects of laws and other legal acts to the public authorities with legislative initiative, the highest authority of the country and, if necessary, state and municipality institutions; provides the information related to the state security, conclusions and recommendations.
